Annotating at Image Magick

This is a tutorial to help you learn how to annotate on your images at Image Magick

Note: Not all image Magicks are the same, and some adjustments may be needed with setting values!
Note: If you have a printer, you might want

The first thing you will need is an image or background to resize and annotate on. For this I have chosen a plain 150x150 solid color background!

Click on image BG below!
150x150.jpg

Take your image or background to Here: Image Magick

To get your image into ImageMagick, you will need to CC&P the background URL in, so you will need to remove the http:// that is already there and paste in your URL. Once you have done this, click on view!

I`ve resized the background at image magick by clicking on resize in the top tool bar, and then clicking on double and resize. So we now have an image that is 300x300 and looks like this:

300x300.gif

Now you are ready to select the type of "font" (text style)" text size", "color" and "position" to place it on your image!

Below is a sample of annotating!
Each one is numbered and below the graphic will be the details I used to position each of them!

sample.jpg

Note: In annotate, the center position is for just that! CENTER
The +0+0 are for locations to place your text on your image.
The first +0 is for moving the text from left to right in the North West position! And from right to left in the North East positon! (it`s the same for SE & SW)
The second +0 is for moving the text North & South! It acts just like the first one only in a different direction!

Ok, Now you are ready to annotate! You`ve entered your URL and entered Image Magic! Now click on "Annotate"! On the next step you will type in the text you want to annotate on the image. Choose the "font" (text style) you want to use. Where it says "fill color" put in the color you want to use! Next is "point size"! This determines how large or small the text will be!

There are three other adjustments that I used in making the above image!
GRAVITY, LOCATION & ROTATE!

GRAVITY is the direction you wish to move,
NW, NE, SW, SE, N, S, CENTER!

LOCATION is where you put numbers that determine the placement of your text!
RIGHT, LEFT, NORTH, SOUTH!

And ROTATE, which allows you to turn your text right or left in degrees.

Note: If you have a printer, it would help you if you print this page to refer to while practicing at ImageMagick Annotate!

I chose to use the BOOKMAN OLD STYLE BOLD font style for all of the examples in this first image! I used the same POINT size for all of them also! Below are all the settings used to make each numbered text in the above image!

Text= #1
Gravity= North West
Location= +10+30
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= red
Point size= 24
Rotate= 0.0

Text= #2
Gravity= North East
Location= +20+200
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= blue
Point size= 24
Rotate= 90.0

Text=#3
Gravity= North East
Location= +40+10
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color=green
Point size= 24
Rotate= -90.0 (thats minus 90.0)

Text= #4
Gravity= Center
Location= +0+0
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= orange
Point size= 24
Rotate= -45.0 (thats minus 45.0)

Text= #5
Gravity= Center
Location= +0+0
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= black
Point size= 24
Rotate= 45.0

Text= #6
Gravity= Center
Location= +0+0
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= darkblue
Point size= 24
Rotate= 0.0

Text= #7
Gravity= North East
Location= +10+250
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= dodgerblue
Point size= 24
Rotate= 0.0

Text= #8
Gravity= North
Location= +150+280
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= maroon
Point size= 24
Rotate= 0.0

Text= #9
Gravity= North West
Location= +10+90
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= maroon
Point size= 24
Rotate= 90

Text= #10
Gravity= North West
Location= +50+290
font= Bookman Old Style Bold
Fill color= blue
Point size= 24
Rotate= -90.0 (thats minus 90.0)

"Annotating multiple lines of text at the same time!"

Here is the process to do this. You need an image large enough to hold all your text first! For this, I re-sized the 150x150 white image to 100x300! You add the text as seperate lines of text, but you will annitate them all at one time. You will see this in the example settings below! After each letter, click your return key, and the curser will move under the letter you just typed. For a space, do it the same way, click the space bar for a space, and the return key to drop the curser down.

Text= H
          E
          L
          P

          a
          t

          W
          E
          B
          T
          V

Gravity= North
Location= +0+20
font= Activa
Fill color= red
Point size= 24
Rotate= 0.0

"Making you own personalized background"

Ever wonder how those personalized backgrounds were made? Here is an EXAMPLE I made, and below it is the process I used to make it! To get the text at a 45 degree angle, you enter 45.0 in the box for ROTATE! A minus or -45.0 will put it from the opposite direction!

Charter.jpg

Text= Charter
Gravity= center
Location= +0+0
font= Black Chancery
Point size= 35
Fill color= white
stroke color= gray
stroke width= 2
Rotate= 45.0

If you noticed, this time I used STROKE COLOR and STROKE WIDTH in addition to the other Attributes when making this! The STROKE COLOR is the outline on the text! The FILL COLOR is just what it says it is, it fills inside the outer Stroke Color giving you a two color text! The STROKE WIDTH determines how wide the Stroke Color will be!

Example, using the Scale Attribute!

This was done using the same FONT and POINT SIZE but changing the SCALE Attributes!

Scale.jpg

Text= EXAMPLE
Gravity= center
Location= +0+0
font= Black Chancery
Point size= 24
Fill color= yellow
stroke color= black
stroke width= 1
Rotate= 0.0
Scale= 1.0, 5.0

Example using the "SKEW X"

Skew x= 0.0 Is where it starts. Changing the first number to 50.0 slanted it the way it did. And using a minus or -50.0 will slant it the other way!

Skew-X.jpg

Text= Example
Gravity= center
Location= +0+0
font= Black Chancery
Point size= 30
Fill color= red
stroke color= none
stroke width= 1
Rotate= 0.0
Scale= 1.0, 1.0
Skew X= 50.0 (A minus 50.0 will slant it the other way)

Example using the "SKEW Y"

Skew Y= 0.0 Is where it starts. Changing the first number to 40.0 gave this effect! And using a minus or -40.0 will do the effect in the other direction!

Skew_y

Text= EXAMPLE
Gravity= center
Location= +0+0
font= Black Chancery
Point size= 30
Fill color= red
stroke color= none
stroke width= 1
Rotate= 0.0
Scale= 1.0, 1.0
Skew Y= 40.0 (A minus -40.0 will slant it the other way)

So by changing Attributes you can get some very interesting Text Styles!

"Using a different Font than Image Magic offers!"

There are many sites that offer different FONTS but most are in Zip FILES.! A few web sites offer these FONTS already UNZIPPED and ready to use! I`ll list a couple below after I explain how to use a different font. While your on the annotate page, look below the FONT MENU and you will see a text box that looks like this the one below!

This is where you put the URL of a different FONT!
A FONT URL will end in .ttf
A standard Font URL will look like this:

http://www.d21c.com/charmed/fonts/fonts1/amazone.ttf

NOTE: When I use a Font from Chicago Chicks fonts for example, I pick the one I want, CC & P and put it in my find box. That way it is available when you need it to annotate with!

You will need to remove the http:// already in the form on the annotate page and paste in the new URL.!
Once you have the new URL entered you continue to follow all the steps, but now you don`t need to pick one of Image Magicks fonts! This will give you a wider selection of Font Styles to choose from!

Here are a a few FONT Sites that are webtv friendly!

Chicago Chick`s Font Resources

Captain Raiders Font Repository

You can see that by changing the numbers moves the text around on the image! And by changing the degree decides what angle the text will be with Rotate! And by using your own FONT you have a much bigger selection to pick from! Don`t be afraid of destroying your image by making a mistake. You only have to use your back button to go back and re-do it. Take the time to look at the annotate page and familiarize yourself with where everything is!
